Trump président : comment en est-on arrivé là?

Commençons par le commencement…ou plutôt par la fin : Hillary Clinton a bien gagné une majorité des suffrages des électeur-trice-s des Etats-Unis. Selon les derniers résultats provisoires, elle et son co-listier Tim Kaine ont en effet obtenu 64 925 492 soit 48 % des voix contre 62 562 131 soit 46,25 % des voix pour Donald Trump et son co-listier Mike Pence, avec un taux de participation de 58,4 % (1). Et pourtant, c’est Donald Trump qui a été annoncé vainqueur et qui devrait être formellement confirmé comme tel le 19 décembre prochain par le collège électoral puisqu’il aurait remporté 290 à 306 des 538 « grand-e-s électeur-trice-s » qui composent ce dernier. Cette semaine, dans mon petit monde militant, un texte, une revue, une manif et le plein de solidarité avec les révolté-e-s de Baltimore.

– Un texte à lire et à réfléchir : “Du philosémitisme d’Etat”, par Rudolf Bkouche (Ujfp).

– Une chouette nouvelle revue intersectionnelle à découvrir : “L’étau”, premier numéro de la revue des AssiégéEs.

– Un cortège à rejoindre à la manif 1er mai : rendez-vous vendredi à 14h30 au 6 boulevard Voltaire avec les AssiégéEs et le Mwasi.

– Le plein de solidarité avec les révolté-e-s de Baltimore, en relisant/réécoutant Angela Davis…

Now and Then.

The previous year has brought to the headlines images of protest, unrest, questions about race and the reminder that despite the progress made over of the last century, America is far from a whole nation.

Schools have been integrated, the workplace has laws to fight bigotry, the FBI keeps track of hate crimes, a biracial couple can eat Cheerios on a TV commercial, and a biracial man was elected twice to the highest post in the country.

Progress has been made, but as the events of 2014 have reminded us, in many ways as it was, it still remains with many skin-deep issues still lingering under the surface.

Sit-ins at Woolworth lunch counters have been replaced with die-ins in New York’s Grand Central Station. #BlackLivesMatter tweets have replaced “I am a Man” sandwich cards. The national guard in Mississippi has been replaced by the national guard in Missouri.

Through these diptychs, we can measure time and progress. By looking to the past, we glean insights toward the future, perhaps avoiding the pitfalls the next time around. — Shaminder Dulai
